Life insurance, explained.Without the one-carrier pitch.

Direct answers about coverage amounts, policy types, underwriting, beneficiaries, and the decisions families should understand before applying.

Direct answer

What does life insurance actually do?

Life insurance transfers financial risk to an insurance company. If the insured person dies while an eligible policy is in force, the carrier pays the policy benefit to the named beneficiary. The right amount and policy type depend on the income, debts, time horizon, health, budget, and responsibilities being protected.

Questions that change the decision

Then compare.

These answers are educational. Policy availability, underwriting, contract language, licensing, and individual circumstances determine what applies.

01

How much life insurance do I need?

Start with the income your household would need to replace, debts and mortgage balances, education goals, final expenses, existing coverage, savings, and the number of years those responsibilities remain.

02

Is term or permanent coverage better?

Neither is automatically better. Term insurance emphasizes affordable protection for a defined period. Permanent insurance can provide lifelong coverage and cash-value features, usually at a higher premium.

03

Do I need a medical exam?

Not always. Some carriers offer accelerated or simplified underwriting, while larger amounts or certain health histories may require additional records or an exam.

04

Who receives the policy benefit?

The named beneficiary generally receives the proceeds and decides how to use them. Beneficiary designations should be reviewed after major life changes and coordinated with estate planning when appropriate.
